Bonjour, je m'appelle Mlle Gauvreau!
I am very excited to be teaching grade 7 and 8 Math.
I have completed the Math Part 1, 2 and 3 Specialist AQ Course. This course has a strong focus on problem solving, which we are using in Math class, combined with more traditional math. The Upper Grand District School Board has been pushing for the past few years towards implementing more of a problem solving teaching strategy into all math classrooms from Kindergarten through grade 12. I have found that with a strong focus on the basic math skills combined with some problem solving (math strand dependent), the students have great success and build on their skills and confidence in Math.
Students that may struggle with adding, subtracting and multiplying (without calculators) and skip counting (eg. start at 7 and count by 4, etc.) will need to practice and review this at home regularly to be prepared for the grade 7 and 8 curriculum. With teaching through problem solving, the focus is on students making sense of math concepts (constructing understanding). Students learn to reason, prove, communicate, reflect, connect, and ......THINK. Students also learn to persevere through problems, which will then hopefully transfer this working attitude into their every day life.
"By learning to solve problems and by learning through problem solving, students can connect mathematical ideas and develop conceptual understanding. Problem solving forms the basis of an effective mathematics program and should be the mainstay of mathematics instruction." - TIPS4RM
I am a graduate of Nipissing University's Bachelor of Education program and have also completed my French Specialist. I am very enthusiastic about teaching and hope to have a positive impact on every student at John McCrae. I am also involved with some of the intermediate sports teams at John McCrae. I am available to students for extra help during first recess and before school upon request. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with your child and share their learning with you.
Please contact me at school should you have any questions, concerns or issues that you would like to discuss. I look forward to meeting everyone this year,
Mlle Gauvreau
